The Plot: An outcast (Connell) bonds with the popular girl on campus (Michalka) over their shared love of music, and together they decide to form a rock group and enter their school’s upcoming battle of the bands competition.

THE BUZZ: Camp director Todd Graff is back with, ummm, another school-set musical with social misfit themes. But this one has a moderate budget and Vanessa Hudgens, who we thought received her diploma last year, or something. Kudos to Summit Releasing for braving tween waters with an original screenplay, since it’s hard to gauge audience interest without a built-in audience upon which to rely. The HSM crowd is growing up fast, however, and I feel like Graff & co. could stick their necks out a bit — at least enough to earn a PG-13 rating.
